Simple Pleasures : Camel Rides & Pomegranate Juice
Sometimes taking the time to enjoy the simple things in life can be very fulfilling and leave a lasting memory. One of the best times to do so is during vacations. Camel riding was one such unique activity that the kids wanted to do in Israel. It was totally unplanned in our itinerary but we took the time to stop, and do it. And I must tell you it was completely worth it. After having fantastic time floating in the Dead Sea and watching very rare and unexpected waterfalls in Judean desert, we drove from Route 90 towards Jerusalem (Route 1).
The best part of traveling as family with a private guide is the flexibility and we love having that while we travel. As we were driving, we saw few camels on the side of the road and the kids were like “daddy, we want to ride on a camel”. We could surely understand their excitement since it was an experience they have never had before. And since we had the flexibility to stop and enjoy the rides, we made optimum use of it.
We paid almost $10 for this short ride and the man introduced himself to us and his camel, whom he named as “Michael Jackson”. That name brought a smile to all our faces and the kids were anticipating the ride even more.

Once the ride was complete, we took some time to stroll over to the near by shops. Our attention was captured by a man using an orange contraption. Wondering what it was we went closer and inquired about it. He explained in broken bits of english that they make fresh pomegranate juice using this and was very obliging to give us a demo. We happily bought and enjoyed the freshly squeezed juice. And I must tell you , it tastes so much better than the store bought juices we get. After this through out the reminder of our trip we made it a point to have pomegranate juice whenever possible.
I will definitely encourage everyone to try it, when they visit Israel. Its a beverage, that is local to the place and should be part of your exposure to Israeli culture and food. Our impromptu short break turned into a complete delight and will be something we wont forget.
